Chapter Eleven

In five minutes, Luke had the Ferrari pulled out, and the engine revving as Jane climbed into the passenger seat.

"I really shouldn’t leave the ranch," Jane fretted. "Kim’s injury is probably nothing major, but I won’t stop worrying until I see her."

"We’ll be there in no time. Leave it to me, Janie, and hold on tight."

He didn’t burn rubber pulling out of the driveway, but Jane left her stomach hit her spine as he barreled down the twisting roads.

"You don’t have to speed," she said, tight-lipped and anxious.

She was a hypocrite, she knew, admonishing him for driving too fast when she loved the way the sleek sports car hugged the highway. Her pulse raced as the wind whipped hair around her face, making her feel like a kid on a carnival ride. She distracted herself from her fears about Kim, focusing instead on Luke’s long legs and powerful arms as he masterfully guided the vehicle.

They didn't talk much. Occasionally, Luke would reach over to briefly cover Jane's hand with his and offer a reassuring smile.

"You’re such a good driver," she said. "Even at this clip, I feel safe with you behind the wheel."

"I’ve driven professionally," he admitted. "For a short time in my misspent youth. I’m glad that skill is finally coming in handy."

She didn’t need reassurances about his driving. He was the only man she’d met who made an automobile seem like an extension of his own body. She wanted to blame the insistent tingle running through her on the situation, but she couldn’t gaslight herself. Riding beside him in the convertible was a turn-on.

By the time they left the mesas behind and hit the flat desert north of Phoenix, the Ferrari was chewing up the landscape and flouting Arizona’s liberal speed limit. She expected to hear a siren behind them, but the man led a charmed life.

"Why did you quit racing?" she shouted over the wind.

"I wanted something more concrete to show for my life than prize money and trophies. When I bring agricultural solutions to a village that will feed people for generations, I get a sense of satisfaction I can’t get anywhere else.

She was beginning to understand why he’d never be satisfied in a business that made recreational equipment. He’d given her something to think about besides Kim’s rock-climbing accident. Still, once they were close to Mercy Hospital, the frustration of crawling through Phoenix’s urban traffic intensified her anxiety.

It was just like Kim to make light of some horrendous injury. Just the fact that she’d bothered to call at all meant it could be severe.

Luke dropped her off at the emergency room entrance. "I’ll park the car and then join you."

"Thanks." Waving to him, Jane walked through the pneumatic door. She approached a pink-faced Rubenesque woman in blue scrubs and a large-faced Mickey Mouse watch on her wrist, sitting behind the reception desk.

The woman glanced up with a welcoming smile. "May I help you?"

"My sister is here. Kim Grant. She fell rock climbing."

"We see a lot of that in this area," the woman said.
